50 Cent Vs. Kanye West: The Plot Thickens

November 2nd, 2005

With the release and collapse of 50 Cents second album…. umm I can’t even remember the name; he has been lashing out on everyone, looking for a reason it sucked. Whether its blaming the hand that fed him, Dr. Dre, for not giving him enough studio time with his mastery, his own crew The Game for stealing some of his Gangsta market share, or the pop music landscape in general. After stating a few months back that everyone wanted a more “non-confrontational” artist, and the (liberal) media just picked Mr. West to fit the bill. Allow me to editorialize these charges against ‘Ye, Kanye’s album is good, filled with good music, from one of the best producers in the business, himself. While Fitty’s record comes off as sounding ‘ohh soo 2002′ with interchangeable lyrics from previous albums, see Candy Stick or was it Magic Shop, eh I can’t remember.

Anyway it appears 50 is grabbing headlines again he is now saying he disagrees with Kanye’s “Bush wants to kill all black people” comment, which I may or may not be misquoting. I’m glad he pondered this one for a good 2 months, you don’t want to come off as sounding like an idiot when talking about something as prickly as politics, but for a “gansta rappa” to be defending a republican president, just seems kind of screwed up. I’d also like to mention Mr. Cent’s new movie is coming out soon, I’m sure that is completely unrelated to the timeliness of his comments.

A Lesson In Counting: Broken Social Scene Live

October 28th, 2005

So I went and saw those lovely Canadians do their thing in philly on Monday. I don’t know about you but everytime I see them my counting skills are improved greatly by the time I leave. “Oooh there’s 12 people on stage” …. “oh wait, there is 5 guitars” … “look two drummers and three trumpets”. Needless to really say they were awesome and I bought a poster, It’s on my wall in my bedroom.

Metric, Bowery Ballroom Oct. 5, 2005

October 24th, 2005

Back on October 5th I went to The Bowery and saw Emily Haines do her thing all over the stage. I seen Metric perform before way back in ott three, at the First Unitarian Church in Philly, back then Emily was working the Merch table while Broken Social Scene performed, she sold me my t-shirt, I love that t-shirt. I could have swore I saw sparks fly, a restraining order, and a full year of therepy has proven it was all in my mind. The rest of the ohhh-so-pretty(grainy) pictures are after the jump. Lots of Technical Difficulties

October 24th, 2005

As some of my dedicated readers may or may not have noticed TouchThatDial has been up, down, slow, crappy for the past few weeks, crappy mostly cus there hasn’t been any posts, the others because itmay.be/media (the web publishing conglomerate TTD is associated) was searching for a new server home on the broad span of the internets. Finally we found said home, updated MySQL and blah blah blah, I don’t know what I’m talkin about either. In short we have returned, with a beautiful new backend, like J.Lo home from the Lypo Ranch. Expect more of the same really bitchy rants on hipsterista, Pitchfork, and labels we have all come to know and love, accompanied with songs you may or may not have heard. Welcome to Touch That Dial v 1.2.

Wolf Parade Gets Crashy

October 12th, 2005

You see that little sign, that little guy is holding right there? Think about it for a second, I’m sure we are all guilty of it, especially in this bitter little hipster world we wrap ourselves around, but the first thing out of our mouths would most likely be a complaint. I am often very guilty of the complaining, just my most recent post before this one was me being kind of bitchy about Pitchfork’s scoring of the new My Morning Jacket album, so for today at least I’m going to suspend the complaints and do my best to sort of make amends with my warped little mind.

Today we have Wolf Parade, now everything about this band would make me want to hate them in normal circumstances, too many synths, too few original melodies, an affinity to sound too much like an 80’s band a la The Cars, and a lastly a song about “Modern” Life. The whole “Modern” thing has been done to death esspecially lately, Bloc Party, Futerheadsd, etc. are all about making observations on our “modern” world. Well Bowie did it back in 1983 with Modern Love, a song about “Modern” this or that really isn’t that “modern”. Anyway I find myself enjoying one of their tracks in particular, “I’ll Believe in Anything” from the snapping snare in the begining to the lazy melodic guitar, this one has you hooked from the start. Then the chorus hits, “I’ll believe (CRASH) in anything (CRASH)/you believe (CRASH) in anything (CRASH)” that cymbal does it for me, such a great crashing sound. Probably one of my favorite tracks I heard all year, see and I didn’t even complain once.

Pitchfork Still Has Their Head Firmly Rooted Up One’s Own Asses

October 6th, 2005

Sorry, but no new music today, check back tomorrow for a review of the Metric show from last night, also a some tracks from The Most Serene Republic a band that I find to be pretty good, though Pitchfork didn’t seem to like them too much. Speaking of Pitchfork, anyone see that review of My Morning Jacket’s Z today? Of course I’m not happy with it, but I feel I may be biased. To me it seems like the reviewer heard the album twice, and then read some bio sheet from three years ago, that was written by someone from Spin.

Canada, Slowly Taking Over the World

October 5th, 2005

Begin internal monologue reassuring you that America is better than Canada:

Okay, everyone can stop with this Canada stuff now, we apologize for the whole “Blame Canada” thing if you would please stop reminding us how much “better” you are than us. I know you have the Arcade Fire, Wolf Parade, Metric, Neil Young, Broken Social Scene, The New Pornographers, Alanis Morri….. haha almost got me to say that one there didn’t you! If we could only stop all these New York fad bands from hogging all our music press we just might have some good music to speak of too. I mean we have My Morning Jacket, right? I like those guys. And hey let’s take foriegn policy, sure your country spends less than a third on defense than we do but we got bombs! big ones! All because the average american voter hates any sign of weakness and what is weaker than someone saying we don’t need 800 $1 billion tanks? Wait! I’m supposed to be thinking of good things, let’s see here, we have cheesesteaks, and Freedom! God Bless Freedom!

End unconvincing internal monologue.

Clue to Architecture in Helisinki

October 4th, 2005

Yesterday while stumbling through the internet, in tears because Touch That Dial was down due to server issues, I wandered my way into the most excellent 3 Hive. Not only is that site super clean looking, it also has some most excellent tunes for listening pleasures. One band that they posted recently was Clue to Kalo, and at that moment upon first listening to “As Tommy Fixes Fights” the day brightened a bit and my website began working again. You could say its coincidence, but I find solace in the irrational, like Christians do. Anyway I’m getting side tracked, Clue to Kalo, encompass so much in this one song, glitchy and shimmering electronics along the lines of Dntel, snip and clip editing of The Books, and the peaceful melodic vocals that remind me of the Junior Boys. All these influences basically just boil down into an aural melting pot of pleasure. Needless to say I will be picking up there recently released One Way, It’s Every Way LP .

After hearing “Tommy” I went on a bit of a hunt to find out some more about this Clue to Kalo band, and saw that they reworked a song from another band that some of you may know, Architecture in Helsinki. Clue to Kalo did a pretty sweet remix of “Kindling” on AiH’s Keepsake EP that came out last year, so I decided to include it here.

Clue To Kalo - As Tommy Fixes Fights Thanks, 3 Hive

Architecture in Helsinki - Kindling (the origninal, included here for archival purposes, off of their much-underrated Fingers Crossed LP.)

October 3rd, 2005

Sorry there were no posts with MP3’s today, things have been kinda crazy busy today. I took off work on Friday to head on home to PA for my brothers wedding, then later today, as you may have noticed, server had some trouble, but we are back up and running and I will have new awesome (to me at least) songs for tomorrow. :)
